The WP2 research objectives set out in the proposal for this research were fulfilled by drawing up the deliverables and the activities presented below. Specifically, the activities through which the research objectives of the WP2 were met are the following:

1.  Lectures of scientific coordinator in the context of research diffusion  through educational seminars, in the course LAW283, taught in the Law Department of the Law School of the University of Nicosia, on 26.11.2020 and 03.12.2020. The presentations were in English and had the following topics:

 – “Online disinformation and dissemination of fake news – Criminal and criminological treatment – Reflections and theoretical perspectives on the practices and limits of prevention”

– Online disinformation and dissemination of fake news – Criminal and criminological treatment – Survey methodology – Survey outcome in Greece (2020)”

Certificates in Greek and English were issued for these lectures.

4. Speech of scientific coordinator in English at the conference on “Cybersecurity: Protecting your On-Line Business” in the framework of the project Digital Internationalization and Financial Literacy Skills for Micro-Entrepreneurs Project number 600834-EPP-1-2018-1- MT-EPPKA2-KA (organized by: University of West Attica & IDEC SA), on Friday, April 9, 2021 with the subject: Modern aspects of cyber crime and cyber security – The fake news example.

5. Participation of the entire research team in the conference “11th Infocom Security – From CyberSecurity… to Cyber ​​Resilience” on 21, 22 and 23 April 2021 (https://www.infocomsecurity.gr/ ) in an exclusive panel for the detailed presentation of the research  with title “Fake news on the internet – legal and technological approach – research data and research results at the University of West Attica (see online the program with the relevant publicity formalities regarding the financing of the research by GGEK and ELIDEK at url: https://www.infocomsecurity.gr/11o-infocom-security/infocom-security-day-2- pempti-22-aprilioy / – accessed on 11.07.2021). The organizers of the conference have posted on YouTube a video recording of our entire presentation (url: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97NnzLeMwz0 – duration: from 6:30:45 to 7:32:28 – accessed on 11.07.2021). Technological applications for the prevention of misinformation as well as results of field research with proposals for anti-crime policy were presented in detail provisions of criminal law for dealing with fake news.

6. Speech of the scientific coordinator in English at the international online conference ‘Contemporary Societies in Motion – Pioneering qualitative research methods in the study of deviance and social control’ organized on 27 and 28 May 2021 by the European Society of Criminology, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the National Center for Social Research and the Center for the Study of Crime on “Online fake news and disinformation criminal treatment – Survey outcome in Greece – Quantitative and qualitative analysis”. The results of the research and their analysis were presented in the speech.

7. Speech of scientific coordinator in English on “Criminal and criminological treatment of hoaxes – De lege ferenda challenges through an interdisciplinary approach according to the survey outcome of the project” in a panel discussion entitled “Misinformation and fake news in a” contemporary society in motion ”- Interdisciplinary research approach and suggestions at the University of West Attica (Greece)» at the international online conference  ‘Contemporary Societies in Motion – Pioneering qualitative research methods in the study of deviance and social control’ which was organized on 27 and 28 May 2021 by the European Society of Criminology, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the National Center for Social Research and the Center for the Study of Crime. Τhe proposals resulting from the research and the qualitative analysis of its results were presented, in terms of optimizing the penal provisions for the prevention of misinformation.

8. Speech of the scientific coordinator on “Fake news and Covid-19 – The legal treatment” at the online scientific conference on “Occupational Therapy – Rehabilitation – Interdisciplinarity”, organized by the Department of Occupational Therapy of the University of West Attica on May 31, 2021. The legal approaches and provisions regarding misinformation were presented  and in particular during the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as project research results related to specific protection against misinformation on health issues.

9. Collaboration with the research projects “Eunomia”, which is implemented at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University of West Attica, and “EDUCABILITY – Building the Capacity of Educators & Librarians in Information Literacy”, which is implemented at the Department of Archives, Library and Library of the University of West Attica and creation of an infographic in Greek and English entitled “5 steps against misinformation and fake news”. The infographic was distributed to all members of the academic community of the University of West Attica (Professors, Administrators, students) in April 2021 and was displayed in the discussion panel entitled “Misinformation and fake news in a” contemporary society in motion “– Interdisciplinary research approach and suggestions at the University of West Attica (Greece) »at the international online conference ‘Contemporary Societies in Motion – Pioneering qualitative research methods in the study of deviance and social control’ which was organized on 27 and 28 May 2021 by the European Society of Criminology , the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the National Center for Social Research and the Center for the Study of Crime.

The action f) of the plan for the dissemination of results regarding educational seminars for the information of scientists and social media users has been fulfilled by informing the scientists and social media users with the public available infographic.

10. Participation of scientific coordinator in the online show of the University of West Attica “FIRST FROM THE WEST” on June 17, 2021. In this show on “Fake News vs Freedom of Expression” were hosted Messrs. Panos Alexandris, Secretary General of Justice & Human Rights of the Ministry of Justice and Fotis Spyropoulos, Lawyer of Athens & Postdoctoral Researcher of the University of West Attica. The discussion was moderated by Glykeria Terzi. The url of the published show is: https://firstfromthewest.uniwa.gr/broadcasts/fake-news-vs-eleytheria-tis-ekfrasis/. In this show, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice, as responsible for the protection of the right to freedom of expression, was notified of the proposals that have emerged from the project regarding the legislative change of the provisions concerning the phenomenon of hoaxes and misinformation.

The actions g) and h) of the plan of dissemination have been fulfilled, by sharing the proposals,  to entities in charge, or other relevant, for the legislative change of the provisions concerning the hoaxes phenomenon

 

 

11. The research team organized a conference on the subject of research on 29.10.2021, in which the final results of the research were presented. The online Conference was entitled “Misinformation & fake news – Interdisciplinary approach & practices for dealing with it, organized by the Center for the Study of Crime (KEME) hosted by the University of West Attica. The research team and the scientific coordinator requested and received the patronage of the Ministry of Justice. All members of the research team of the project as well as the  scientists Associate Professor Vassilis Karagiannopoulos, University of Portsmouth (UK) / Prof. Charalambos Patrikakis, Assistant Professor Dimitrios Kouis & Dr. Fotini Efthimiou from the University of West Attica / Prof. Dr. Katarina Bader, Dr. Carolin Jansen & Prof. Dr. Lars Rinsdorf, from the Department of Electronic Media, Hochschule der Medien (HdM), Stuttgart, Germany / Vassilis Papakostas, Police Director, Director of the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate. Greetings were addressed by the Rector of PADA Professor Panagiotis Kaldis and the President of KEME Dionysis Chionis.

The actions of b) of the plan for the dissemination of results have been fulfilled, regarding the organization of an information conference at the end of the project in order to display the final results and the actions of g) and h) of the plan for the dissemination of results regarding the notification to competent and relevant proposals for the legislative change of the provisions concerning the phenomenon of fake news and hoaxes, given the auspices of the Ministry of Justice.

 

12. Lecture of the scientific coordinator, in the context of dissemination of his research through educational seminars, in the event – seminar organized by ELSA Greece in collaboration with its local associations – members ELSA Thessaloniki, ELSA Athens and ELSA Komotini in the context of ELSA Day on November 24, 2021 under the broad theme “Privacy in the Digital Age” with the subject: “Fake news on the Internet: Criminal and forensic approach – Investigation results”

A certificate in Greek was issued for this lecture.

Fulfilled the action  f) of the dissemination plan regarding educational seminars for the information of scientists and social media users.

 

13. Presentation – speech of the scientitic coordinator with the subject  “Fake news in health issues – Legal treatment and research results” at the 5th Panhellenic Congress of Psychiatric Forensics-under the auspices of the Ministry of Health, EKPA Medical School and the Hellenic Psychiatric Society, on 4 December 2021. The presentation focused on the evolution of technology and how it affects the dissemination of false news, in a special report on health misinformation, especially during the coronavirus pandemic, on the legislative treatment of misinformation in general and in particular on , regarding public health (after the re-modification of Article 191 of the Penal Code for the dissemination of false news) and the results of research to prevent and address misinformation with special reference to health issues.

Fulfilled the action d) of the dissemination plan regarding the presentation of the findings of the project in international conferences on criminal law, criminology and information technology.

14. Publication by scientific coordinator of a monograph entitled “Misinformation and fake news on the internet – Criminal and criminological approach – Research results for the development of anti-crime policy and relevant regulatory framework” by the publications “LEGAL LIBRARY” by Giannis Panousi. The monograph presents the definitions of misinformation and fake news, the etiological factors, the mechanisms of dissemination, the social networks with the corresponding social influence. The following are comparative data from the legislation [worldwide], analysis of the Greek legislation [especially for articles 191 and 162 of the Penal Code], as well as a reference to European and international texts. The approach of criminal theories, based on both digital technologies and research with its results and de lege ferenda proposals complete the text.

The action of the plan for the dissemination of results in relation to the publication of a relevant monograph has been fulfilled.

In all activities for the publicity and promotion of the project there is the corresponding report of the financing of the project by ELIDEK and GSRT / GGEK, as provided in the rules of project promotion and according to the possibilities of the graphic environment of the places of publication.
